At Garibaldi Crossing Dental, we do everything possible to preserve our patients’ natural teeth. However, there are times when a tooth extraction is the only option for protecting one’s overall oral health. While this can be a daunting procedure for some, tooth extractions are commonly performed and always done with great care, consideration, and sensitivity to each patient’s experience. Our dental practice provides patients with safe, simple tooth extractions to optimize their oral health.
There are two types of extractions: simple and surgical. While our clinic regularly performs both types of extractions, we will refer patients to an oral surgeon if the tooth is deemed too complicated. Here is what you can expect from both procedures…
With a simple extraction, you will be administered a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. This ensures you only feel pressure, not pain, during your tooth extraction. When the area is effectively numbed, we first loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and then remove the tooth using forceps.
With a
surgical extraction, you will receive local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free, relaxed experience. If requested, an oral surgeon can administer intravenous anesthesia; however, only oral sedation is delivered in our dental clinic. Following the anesthetic, your dentist will make a small incision in your gums. Depending on the situation, your dentist may need to remove some bone around the tooth or cut the tooth to safely remove it.
Whether you need a simple or surgical extraction, rest assured that your comfort and health will always be prioritized. Using effective numbing solutions and advanced techniques, your tooth extraction will be painless and peaceful.
Keeping your natural teeth in place for as long as possible is always ideal. That being said, there are situations where tooth extractions are the best course of treatment. For example, some cases where a tooth extraction may be required include:
With both simple and surgical tooth extractions, it is normal to experience some discomfort following the procedure. In most cases, you can alleviate discomfort by taking over-the-counter pain medications, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Some slight swelling and tenderness are also common during the healing process but should not last more than a few days after the procedure. Our dental team will provide you with clear after-care instructions to ensure you heal quickly and effectively.
